Sunscreen (SPF): General Questions

What is SPF and how does it work?

SPF (Sun Protection Factor) measures how well a sunscreen protects against sunburn-causing UV rays — higher SPF means more protection. But the number alone isn't the whole story: how much you apply, how evenly you apply it, and how often you reapply

What does “Broad Spectrum” mean?

Broad Spectrum sunscreen protects against both types of UV rays — UVA and UVB. A sunscreen that’s not broad spectrum only protects from UVB rays. Both Hot Block and Sol Power are Broad Spectrum, so you’re covered on all fronts.

How often should I reapply sunscreen?

Reapply at least every 2 hours — and immediately after towel drying. Both Hot Block and Sol Power are water-resistant for up to 40 minutes while swimming or sweating, so reapply after that window too. No sunscreen is fully waterproof, so don’t skip t

Where does sunscreen fit in my skincare routine?

Apply sunscreen as the last step of your AM skincare routine — after moisturizer and before makeup. Touch up throughout the day every 2 hours as needed.

Can I wear it under makeup or with skincare?

Yes. Apply Sol Power as the final step of your morning routine. Its lightweight texture layers easily over skincare and under makeup without feeling heavy.

Are Sunski sunscreens regulated and safe?

Yes — seriously. In the U.S., sunscreen is regulated by the FDA as an over-the-counter (OTC) drug. That means every Sunski sunscreen has been tested for safety, proven to work, and clearly labeled. Both Hot Block and Sol Power are dermatologist teste

Are your sunscreens reef safe?

“Reef Safe” is not a term regulated by the FDA or any official body, and many brands use it loosely — which has led to confusion and green-washing in the category. We choose not to use the term because we feel it can be misleading. Instead, we focus

Is sunscreen safe for children?

For children under 6 months, please ask a doctor before use. Keep all sunscreens out of reach of children. If swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away.

How should I store my sunscreen?

Protect both Hot Block and Sol Power from excessive heat and direct sun — this is especially important for Hot Block, which is a solid stick formula that can soften in high heat. Keep them somewhere cool when you’re out on an adventure.

Can I recycle the sunscreen packaging?

Both sunscreen products are made with Polypropylene (#5) and/or Polyethylene (#4) plastics. Check with your local waste management provider to see if they accept #4 and #5 plastics in your area.

What’s the difference between Hot Block and Sol Power sunscreens?

Hot Block is a mineral stick (SPF 50, Zinc Oxide) — portable, precise, and great for on-the-go application and targeted touch-ups during high-exposure adventures. Sol Power is a chemical lotion (SPF 50) — featherlight, fast-absorbing, and built for e

Can I use both Hot Block and Sol Power sunscreens?

Yes, but do not mix the two formulas together. They should be applied in layers, not blended. The right approach: apply Sol Power first and let it fully absorb, then layer Hot Block on for added protection or touch ups throughout the day.

Do you ship sunscreen internationally or to Hawaii?

Due to regulations around sunscreen products, we're unable to ship our sunscreen collection internationally at this time. For customers in Hawaii, only Hot Block is available to ship — as a mineral sunscreen that is Hawaii Reef Act 104 Compliant, it
